چکیده

Apseudohomogeneous model of the nitrifying activated sludge process was developed to investigate the effects ofmass-transport resistance and heterotrophic/nitrifier competition on the apparent relationship between dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and nitrification . The kinetics of both heterotrophic carbon oxidation and autotrophic ammonia oxidation within activated sludge flocs were described by an interactive-type, multiple-substrate-limiting model. The values for the model's parameters were estimated from a series of experiments that were conducted in laboratory-scale nitrifying activated sludge reactors . Using the estimated parameter values, the model was used to simulate the effect oforganic shock loads and steady-state nitrification efficiency over a typical range of mean cell retention times (MCRTs), DO concentrations, and levels of mass-transport resistance . Varying oxygen transport effects, MCRTs, and heterotrophic/autotrophic competition for DO can combine to give apparent nitrification-limiting DO concentrations that range from 0.5 mg/L to as high as4.0 mg/L. WWTPs’ effluents or through infiltration where land application is employed as a method for disposal of effluent

A local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) experiencing poor nitrification tracked down high level of surfactants in the plant’s influent and effluent. The aims of this project were to assess the potential inhibitory effect of surfactants on activated sludge processes. The effect of the presence of TergitolNP-9, TrigetolNP-7, Trigetol15-S-9, dodecylbenzene sulphonate (SDBS) and sodium dodecyl su...

Seeding of Nitrifying Bacteria as a Way for Nitrification Improvement

Seeding of nitrifying bacteria into the activated sludge process may decrease the necesary volume needs for a stable nitrification process. Both theoretical and experimental studies were carried out in order to evaluate the effects of seeding. A model was developed for prediction of the effects of seeding of nitrifying bacteria from a separate stage into the activated sludge process. Seeding te...

Adverse effects of erythromycin on the structure and chemistry of activated sludge.

This study examines the effects of erythromycin on activated sludge from two French urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Wastewater spiked with 10 mg/L erythromycin inhibited the specific evolution rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 79% (standard deviation 34%) and the specific N-NH4+ evolution rate by 41% (standard deviation 25%). A temporary increase in COD and tryptophan-like fluo...

Pharmaceutical Wastewater Chemical Oxygen Demand Reduction: Electro-Fenton, UV-enhanced Electro-Fenton and Activated Sludge

In this study, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from a pharmaceutical wastewater (PhW) was reduced by several techniques such as electro-Fenton (EF), photo electro-Fenton (PEF) and activated sludge (AS) processes and the obtained data were compared with each other. The effects of several parameters such as pH, current density, H2O2/Fe2+ molar ratio, volume ratio of ...
